Ouseburn Circle Autumn Term

Nestled at the top of the Ouseburn Valley, overlooking the fields and banks of the Ouse, The Cumberland Arms is the beating heart of the community. Find us tucked into the right-hand side of the bar, bathed in light pouring through the stained-glass windows. The space is ours alone for the session, so no need to worry about being overheard or interrupted. This cosy, intimate space gives you a feeling of warmth and belonging, which is so often needed in our motherhood journeys. Our Writing Circles are weekly mother & baby groups, using writing & community in beautiful settings to support the transition into motherhood. The circles are open to anyone who self-identities with mothering or motherhood, whatever way that looks.

Taster session

Never been to a circle before? A Taster Session lets you try one out before committing to a full term. These are a super warm, welcoming introduction to the magic of MotherFolk writing circles. Please note: Buying a taster session doesn't automatically hold you a place on the current term - if the term you've tried is already full by the time you come to book, we can't guarantee a spot. If that happens, you won't lose out: we'll guarantee you a place on the following term instead.

Access

Parking - There is on free street parking and free parking bays located along James Place Street If travelling by bus - disembark on Shields Road, the pub is located behind the big optician over the dual carriage way, there are traffic lights located behind KFC to make crossing a bit safer On foot - From the east end of Byker Bridge (between the polish food shop and big optician) following the cobbled street and steps down to the pub (keep an eye out for Lenny the horse on your right handside) or for step free access travel to the pub from Byker bank along James Place Street There will be space for some buggies if you would like to bring one, these can be stored in the left hand side when you enter the pub with the session running in the right.

Hi, I'm Beth

I am the circle holder for Newcastle East

I am a first-time mum to a little girl. Welcoming my daughter into the world has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life, but it has also been one that really cracked me open, taught me many lessons and magnified many of the parts of myself that were previously hidden.

I started attending MotherFolk writing circles when I was three months postpartum, and it was the best thing I could have done. It gave me an anchor to my week, a space to share my experiences with other mothers, and a dedicated time to process the huge changes I was going through in my own matrescence. It really did save me in lots of ways.

I am so excited to be welcoming more mothers to experience MotherFolk and to be part of a community that values mothers' experiences and offers an opportunity to feel validated - especially during a time when you are so often told to just be thankful.

Absolutely not! Our circles are not writing classes, and they’re not about producing perfect pieces of writing. Writing is simply the tool we use to connect with ourselves and unpack our experiences a little bit. We will always give you very easy prompts to jump into, and you will never be asked to read your writing aloud to the group.
