There is a specific kind of magic about 1b Books. You’ll find this beautiful independent bookshop tucked away on a quiet Heaton corner. When the shop transforms for our writing circles, the space feels like a secret haven. Surrounded by floor-to-ceiling shelves and bathed in a soft, low glow, it’s a deeply intimate spot to write and share - a place where the rest of the world feels miles away. Our Writing Circles are weekly mother & baby groups, using writing & community in beautiful settings to support the transition into motherhood. The circles are open to anyone who self-identities with mothering or motherhood, whatever way that looks. About the host

Hello! I'm Bethan

Founder of MotherFolk and your Circle Holder

Bethan is an award-winning writer, doula, and Founder of MotherFolk. She is a Mum of two fierce children.

Her work has been staged at the likes of Northern Stage, Live Theatre, Park Theatre London, Theatre Hullabaloo, and English Touring Theatre.

She was founder & Artistic Director of BRASH Theatre Company, Producer & Lead Facilitator at Northern Stage, and has worked as a creative facilitator for the RSC, Pilot Theatre, and Newcastle & Northumbria Universities.

She is a certified as a doula with Nurturing Birth.

Through MotherFolk, she brings together her experience as a space-holder, creative director, and writer/mother, to trailblaze towards a new kind of motherhood culture across the UK.

Absolutely not! Our circles are not writing classes, and they’re not about producing perfect pieces of writing. Writing is simply the tool we use to connect with ourselves and unpack our experiences a little bit. We will always give you very easy prompts to jump into, and you will never be asked to read your writing aloud to the group.
