Introducing MotherFolk by Candlelight: adults-only writing circles for mothers at every stage. Using writing, community, and candlelight to put down our motherhoods in the heart of the winter hustle.
Motherhood evolves, but the need to be held never ends. MotherFolk by Candlelight offers childcare-free gatherings designed to give you uninterrupted space created entirely for you and your feelings. Whether you’re the mother of a baby, a toddler, a child, a teenager, or even a grown-up - MotherFolk wants to hear your story. As we approach the longest night of the year, this circle explores darkness as a threshold for rest, introspection, and transformation. Winter’s dark earth holds life quietly underground, resting and gathering the strength needed to break through. As mothers, we often embody this dark earth, carrying invisible loads and burying our own roots to sustain the world around us. The dark holds a fierce duality: a soft shield where we can safely unravel, and an invitation for our wildest, untamed thoughts to arise. This is a gentle invitation to pause on the cusp and honour the quiet depths and unseen sides of you. Instead of rushing toward the light, we will find safety, rest, and connection in the darkness, sharing space, breath and words.

About the host

Hello, I'm Alex

Circle Holder for Gateshead & Sunderland

I am a mum to two young kids. I am also a practicing visual artist and art educator. To borrow some words, I am "dancing to a tune of radiant exhaustion" (Jade Montserrat, 2015).

My path to becoming a circle holder began when I first attended MotherFolk circles. Arriving as someone feeling it all, I was amazed by the natural, soft power of sitting with mothers in a circle - a space where every voice belongs and every story shares equal weight. In this, I experienced the immense relief of writing about my life in flux.

Just naming what it feels like to be a mother - whether you keep it to yourself or share it with others - can change things. It can repair you, unlock creativity, and deepen connections. I hope to offer you a safe space to process who you are today - honouring what has been, what is, and what is yet to come.

In my circles, you can show up exactly as you are.

I look forward to meeting you!
